In Celebration of Canada's 150th Birthday
Greg Sigurdson has embarked on an ambitious project. He is presenting 150 Vignettes showcasing memorable events and photos from the BCATP and WWII years. This has become a regular feature in our Museum Facebook Group and we are adapting them to a series of 30 fully-illustrated Webpages at: www.airmuseum.ca/150 To date we have displayed over 20 of these gems. Readers of the CATP Air Museum site are invited to follow along as we progress toward our goal of 150 memories. ~ Bill Hillman ~ Volunteer Editor and Webmaster for www.airmuseum.ca |
CATP MUSEUM IN THE NEWS ON THE WEB
Explore Manitoba’s role in WWII
at the
Commonwealth Air Training Plan
Museum
ManitobaHot.com
The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is the only
museum in the world dedicated solely to
the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, also known
a ‘The Plan’.
The site was chosen as the host nation for air crews
from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA
in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
It was also the training ground for thousands of Royal
Canadian Air Force members.
‘The Plan’ is often regarded as Canada’s greatest
contribution to the allied victory of World War II.
This fascinating museum located at the Brandon Airport
houses
artifacts and objects collected during this time in
history,
as well as numerous airplanes (some of which are still
air worthy)
and vehicles inside its huge and airy space.
These are some of the highlights of the CAPTM.

Even those without a keen interest in aviation will
appreciate
the vast collection of aircraft and information at
the Commonwealth Air Training Museum.
It is, in fact, the only museum in the world dedicated
solely to preserving the history of
the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan
and the airmen who served their country in the air
war of 1939-1945.
The two top pictures come from the Vimy Flight which
stopped by the museum in the summer.
The biplane is one of the aircraft that did the flyover
at Vimy and
the anti-aircraft gun on the right was brought in
from the RCA (Royal Canadian Artillery) Museum at CFB Shilo
just east of Brandon. Both groups are good friends
and stweards of our history.

Maid in the Shade — by Matt Goerzen Westman journalists had a rare chance on Tuesday morning to get up close and personal with a rare piece of avian history. For the next several days, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum will play host to a B-25J, nicknamed "Maid in the Shade."
Brandon Sun ~ 2017.08.23Currently owned by the Arizona-based Commemorative Air Force, this particular American bomber flew 15 missions in Italy and Yugoslavia during the Second World War, though it was only in service for a few months in 1944.
On Tuesday morning, myself and a few other journalists, along with two local military veterans, were given the chance to take a short flight in this historic aircraft. It's one of those things that I can cross off my bucket list — took a flight in a military bomber from the 1940s. I'm just glad I had a camera in my hand for what turned out to be a perfect August morning.
